Free Form Fibers was notified by the U.S. Department of Energy that it had been selected to receive $925,000 in funding to help prototype and mature technologies and processes that address critical materials challenges in high-impact areas. Critical materials are the building blocks of our clean energy future and are in short supply while demand is increasing. Our project is one of 14 that will accelerate critical materials innovation while promoting safe, sustainable, economic, and efficient solutions to meet current and future supply chain needs.
The funding program is through the Critical Materials Initiative at Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE). FFF’s program is titled “A new approach to manufacturing high purity, low environmental impact silicon carbide feedstock for high power semiconductor chip technology”. We will work with collaborators at Penn State University, Stony Brook University, Argonne National Laboratory, and XTrinSiC to demonstrate the superiority of LCVD-produced silicon carbide powder as a feedstock material for silicon carbide boule manufacturing and then communicate this to the market.
